What this one
actually does

Three questions we answer on every hat before you buy it. A hat that cannot answer all three is not listed at all.

Rain

Wool felt takes on water and goes limp. Shake off what you can, stand the hat upside down on its crown away from any heat source, loosely fill the crown with paper and let it dry in shade for 12 to 24 hours. Heat from a radiator or a dryer sets the distortion permanently. We apply no water-repellent finish to this felt.

Crushing

Light pressure is fine, folding is not. The half-stiffened crown recovers from a squeeze but keeps a mark from a hard fold.

Shedding

New wool felt releases loose surface fibre for the first two to three weeks. Brush the crown and brim in one direction with a soft brush after each wear until it settles. On dark clothing you will see the fibre before it stops.

About this hat

A centimetre wider than the 9 cm and blocked with a gentle upward sweep at the sides so the brim does not read dead flat. The crown is left uncreased.

At this width the hat is noticeably affected by wind. It is not a hat for an exposed platform.

Care

Drying: Air dry upside down on the crown, in shade, away from radiators and direct heat.
Brushing: Brush with a soft brush in one direction only, anticlockwise around the crown.
Storage: Store upside down on the crown or in a rigid box. Never stack anything on top of it.
