Head Fit

measure once, properly

Hat sizing is one number, taken one way. Get it wrong by half a centimetre and a hat that should have fitted will not. Get it right and, most of the time, one of our ten standard sizes is your answer and you can stop reading here.

Custom sizing costs USD 38. We would rather you did not buy it unless you need it, so this page tells you how to find out.

Four ways
people get it
wrong

Every one of these makes the measurement read smaller than the head actually is, which is why so many hats arrive tight.

Too high on the dome

The most common error, and it reads 1 to 2 cm small. The tape has to cross the widest part of the skull, which is lower at the back than most people expect — roughly level with the bump above the nape.

Pulled tight

A tape pulled taut compresses hair and skin and takes half a centimetre off. Firm enough that it does not slip, loose enough that you could slide a finger under it edge-on.

Measured over hair you will not wear

Measure with your hair as it usually is. If you tie it up half the time, measure both ways and tell us both numbers.

Rounded to the nearest whole centimetre

Round to the nearest half. The difference between 57.0 and 57.5 is the difference between a standard size and a fitted band.

At standard ease your inner circumference is 58 cm, which is inside our standard size 58 cm (M). You do not need custom sizing. Order the standard size and keep the USD 38.

A blocked hat holds its inner circumference to about ±0.35 cm. Inside that, a standard size is the right answer.

What we do with this number

Nothing, unless you send it to us. A measurement entered here stays in your browser. If you order custom sizing we keep it to build and to re-cut the band, and for no longer than 12 months.

If your measurement lands inside a standard size, we’ll say so. Custom sizing is for heads that don’t.

Two outcomes,
and we say which

Almost every hat shop with a custom service routes every visitor towards it. We do the opposite: the calculator above tells you to skip it whenever a standard size lands inside the tolerance.

A standard size fits

Your inner circumference lands within ±0.35 cm of one of the ten sizes we block. You order that size, we ship it, and you keep the USD 38. If a different ease setting would land you on a standard size, the calculator says that too.

Outcome two · the reason we exist

You sit between sizes

No ease setting brings you inside the tolerance, or your head is outside 54–63 cm altogether. We build the inner band to your number in 0.1 cm steps and fit it to the hat body you choose.

A fitted band makes the hat made to your specification, so the 14-day right of withdrawal no longer applies to it. You confirm that separately at checkout, never by implication.

The size table

Sizes are the inner circumference of the finished hat. Each row covers ±0.35 cm around the nominal figure, which is the tolerance a blocked felt hat actually holds.

Ease, in one line

The table is inner circumference, not head circumference. Snug adds nothing, Standard adds 0.5 cm, Loose adds 1 cm. Pick the one that matches how you want it to sit and the calculator does the arithmetic.

What happens to your measurement

A head circumference is data about your body. Nothing typed into the calculator leaves your browser. If you send it to us on an order, we use it only to build and re-cut the band, and we delete it after 12 months. Privacy policy.
