What we do with this number

Nothing, unless you send it to us. A measurement entered here stays in your browser. If you order custom sizing we keep it to build and to re-cut the band, and for no longer than 12 months.

If your measurement lands inside a standard size, we’ll say so. Custom sizing is for heads that don’t.

Rain

Felt takes on water. Here is what that costs you.

Every hat page says what a soaking does to that particular felt and how to dry it — upside down, in shade, never with heat. We apply no water-repellent finish and we do not claim one.

Crushing

Some of these roll. Most of them do not.

The packable line rolls into a coil and opens back out. The structured line does not fold at all, and if you fold it, it stays folded. Each page says which, in those words.

Shedding

A new felt hat sheds. All of them.

Two to three weeks for wool, about two for fine rabbit, a month for long nap. Brush in one direction and it stops. You will see it on a dark coat before it does.

Not by season or by occasion. The brim width and the amount of stiffener decide almost everything about how a felt hat behaves, so that is how the catalogue is organised.

Under the felt

The part that
decides everything

A felt hat is three layers: the felt body, the stiffener soaked into its inner face, and the sweatband. How much stiffener went in is what decides whether the hat holds a crease, whether it can be rolled, and whether a fold is temporary or permanent.

You never see it, and almost nobody tells you about it. Every product page here states the density in g/m² and the stiffness grade, because those two numbers predict how the hat will behave better than any adjective would.

Measured, not described

Brim widths,
to the millimetre

“Wide” means nothing. Every hat in the catalogue lists its brim width and crown height in centimetres, taken off the finished hat rather than off the block.

Three habits,
and it lasts

Dry it upside down in shade. Brush it in one direction. Store it on its crown or in a box. Everything else about felt care is detail on top of those three.
