Three questions we answer on every hat before you buy it. A hat that cannot answer all three is not listed at all.
Wool felt takes on water and goes limp. Shake off what you can, stand the hat upside down on its crown away from any heat source, loosely fill the crown with paper and let it dry in shade for 12 to 24 hours. Heat from a radiator or a dryer sets the distortion permanently. We apply no water-repellent finish to this felt.
Light pressure is fine, folding is not. The half-stiffened crown recovers from a squeeze but keeps a mark from a hard fold.
Fine rabbit felt sheds less than wool but still gives off a light surface fibre for about two weeks. One pass of a soft brush in the nap direction clears it.
Blended felt takes the short fine rabbit fibre and carries it on a wool backbone. Under a loupe you can see both fibre lengths interlaced; in the hand it sits about two thirds of the way from wool to full rabbit.
A 7 cm brim, a plain self-felt band, and a wine leather sweatband.
