Three questions we answer on every hat before you buy it. A hat that cannot answer all three is not listed at all.
Water mats the pile into flat patches. Let the hat dry fully in shade upside down, then brush the nap back up in one direction with a soft brush. Brushing it while wet tears the fibre out.
Light pressure is fine, folding is not. The half-stiffened crown recovers from a squeeze but keeps a mark from a hard fold.
The long pile sheds visibly for the first month and wants brushing in the nap direction after every wear. That upkeep is the trade for the surface depth.
The pile is brushed out to roughly three millimetres, long enough that the crown reads two different tones depending on where the light hits it. Run a hand against the nap and it darkens; brush it back and it lifts.
That surface is the reason to buy this hat and also the reason it needs the most upkeep in the line.
