actually does

Three questions we answer on every hat before you buy it. A hat that cannot answer all three is not listed at all.

Rain

The stiffener softens when this hat is soaked and the blocked shape can settle out of true as it dries. Dry it upside down in shade for a full 24 hours and press the crown and brim back by hand while the felt is still slightly damp.

Crushing

Nothing about this shape recovers. A dent in a straight crown wall stays a dent, and a fold in the brim curl stays a fold. It travels in its box or it does not travel.

Shedding

New wool felt releases loose surface fibre for the first two to three weeks. Brush the crown and brim in one direction with a soft brush after each wear until it settles. On dark clothing you will see the fibre before it stops.

About this hat

A short top hat: the crown runs straight up for 15 cm with no taper and no crease, and the 4.5 cm brim curls up at the sides. Every line in it is deliberate, which is why any dent in the crown is immediately visible.

The tallest crown in the catalogue and the least forgiving hat we make.

Care

Drying: Air dry upside down in shade over 24 hours and reshape by hand while slightly damp.
Brushing: Brush in one direction with a soft brush; work the rolled brim edge separately.
Storage: Store in a rigid box. This shape does not survive being stacked or compressed.
